Shangrila Resort Skardu, also known as “Heaven on Earth“, is nestled amongst some of the world’s highest peaks. It encircles the heart shaped “Kachura Lake” and is surrou-nded by fruit laden orchards and flower filled gardens.

A vacation spent at Shangrila Resort is a once in a lifetime experience that one would want to relive again and again. Located at a height of 2500 meters, this area is more commonly known as “The Roof of the World”. Due to its natural beauty, the first impression of Shangrila is of a Fairyland.
There is nothing but sheer beauty that surrounds you while at Shangrila and Skardu. you may find lush green forests, streams and springs, and mountains any where in the world but there is something other than that makes the experience extraordinary and above the rest. First of all there is the contrast. you may go to Switzerland or any where else for that matter, and find scenic hills covered with snow and trees but no where in the world will you find green valleys with trees flooding with red and green apples, streams, springs (both hot and cold), scenery that blows your mind, the world’s three highest mountain ranges meeting at one point, the view of Russia, China, Afghanistan, Pakistan and India while standing in one place along with deserts, semi deserts, and wild life that you think was extinct. The second reason for which this area is rightly called heaven on earth is the people.

The people are welcoming and warm. They have not given up there traditions for the sake of modernism. But the trip should not be made by the faint of heart and those who want to pay some money for some luxury. I would recommend the people looking for adventure and something different (something other than the same old mountains of Europe covered in trees) to make the trip. For me, it was the tour of a life time. You will never experienced nothing like that in Europe, the Americas, Africa or any where. Its ideal for newly wed couples as the air is made up of romance and people who wish to enjoy some adventure in life. And not for the people who wish to go to a nice comfortable hotel room with fancy room service to spend their vacation time (not that it doesn’t have those things, but it would be a hideous waste of money).

The Kaghan Valley is located in Northern Pakistan northeast of Hazara, (NWFP) Khyber-Pakhtunkhuwah. It’s one of the valleys that are relatively easy to reach from Rawalpindi/Islamabad.
The mountain scenery, the dales, lakes, water-falls, streams and glaciers are the main reason to come here. The Valley extends for 155 km rising from an elevation of 2,134 meters to its highest point, the Babusar Pass, at 4,145 meters. Further north from from Babusar Pass, a jeep track leads to Chilas, which is now on Karakoram Highway (the road that connects Islamabad to Xinjiang province of China via Gilgit, Hunza and Khunjerab Pass. Before Karakoram highway was opened in 1978, the only road access to Gilgit was through Kaghan Valley.
Naran is the best base for treks and walks in the valley. There are options for accommodation and restaurants. Naran is best reached by jeep from Balakot some 200 km north of RawalPindi / Islamabad.

The best time to visit Kaghan is in summer months (May to September). From the mid – July up to the end of September, the road beyond Naran, snow-bound throughout the winter, is open right up to Babusar Pass. Movement may be restricted during the monsoon season due to heavy rains and landslides.
In summer it is possible to continue to Gilgit Valley – one hell of a trip with incredible views – but roads are not always in tiptop condition so it may involve some hard work to get to the other site of the mountains.
